I woke up this morning desperately in need of an inspirational devotional. Instead of pulling up one of my devotional apps, I decided to let Jasper.ai develop an inspiring message for me.

Here’s what it produced.

Note: Anytime you see a sentence that begins with >, it’s a command for Jasper.

>write a devotional for today

God is good all the time! All the time, God is good! This is a truth that we can hold on to no matter what life throws us. Good times or bad, we know that God is always good. He loves us unconditionally and wants what is best for us.

It is easy to believe that God is good when things are going well. But what about when life is tough? When facing trials and heartache, it can be hard to remember that God is still good. Yet, even in the midst of our pain, He is there with us, loving us and wanting to help us.

If you are going through a difficult time, know that God is with you. He knows what you are going through and will help you get through it. Trust in Him and lean on Him for strength. Remember, God is always good no matter what life throws your way!

My thoughts

After reading what Jasper wrote, I thought, hey, I’ve heard this my whole life as a preacher’s daughter who grew up in the Black Baptist church. I wanted more depth.

So I asked …

>where did this come from?

From God’s Word. He is the ultimate source of all truth and goodness. His Word shows us that we can trust Him no matter what. So, when life gets tough, remember to turn to God’s Word for strength and comfort. It will remind you that no matter what, God is always good!

I needed more, so …

>provide scriptures

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4

“The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?” — Psalm 27:1

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7

These verses remind us that we can trust God no matter what. He is always good, and His love endures forever! So, turn to God’s Word for comfort and strength when life gets tough. It will remind you that God is always good no matter what!

So Many More Questions

Now that I had the Biblical source, the social scientist in me began to kick in. I had questions. How did the statement “God is Good” become such a regular phrase in my culture?

>history of “God is Good” in the Black Church

The phrase “God is good” is often used in the Black church as a way to express thankfulness and praise to God. It is a reminder that no matter what happens in life, we know that God is always good. This phrase is often used in songs, sermons, and prayers to lift up God's goodness.

The phrase “God is good” can be traced back to the Old Testament, where it is used in various Psalms and Proverbs. In the New Testament, it is used in the book of Romans. This shows us that the idea of God’s goodness is something that has been emphasized throughout Scripture.

The Black church has always been a place where people can go to express thankfulness and praise to God. The phrase “God is good” is often used in the Black church as a way to remind us of His goodness. No matter what we are facing in life, we know that God is always good!

One More Question for Jasper

…because my sanctified friends will probably freak all the way out once they find out I used a robot to write a Christian devotional.

>Do you think connecting AI with God’s word is problematic?

No, I think it can be a helpful way to study and understand Scripture. However, we must be careful not to rely on AI too much, as it is not perfect. We should always consult multiple sources when studying the Bible, including commentaries from biblical scholars. Ultimately, the Holy Spirit must lead us as we seek to understand God’s Word.

This is wild! I just used AI to write a devotional for me and help me reflect on cultural and societal concerns.

Hmm, this could be a post for Medium! I just need to clean it up and give it a snazzy title. Hey Jasper …

>write some titles for today’s devotional

1. God is Good, All the Time

2. Trusting God amid trials

3. Remembering that God is good, no matter what

4. The comfort of knowing that God is always good

5. Thankfulness for a God who is always good!

Moving Forward

It took me less than thirty minutes to put together. Jasper organized concepts around God’s goodness and provided scriptures based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

And now, the critical thinker in me has so many more questions about who “God” is to me, “His” role in society, why I’m using a male pronoun instead of “Her,”… and why this is such a struggle (hint, ask the patriarchy) … and so forth.

So stay posted and follow Jasper and me as we work through these questions together.
